The Second Grade year is all about fostering a love and appreciation for reading and writing. We use Reader's Workshop to improve our reading fluency, accuracy, expression, and comprehension. We expand our writing abilities by balancing narrative and informational writing during our Writer's Workshop. In science, we conduct research on sea life and create Google Slide presentations. The sea life unit culminates in an over-night field trip at the Aquarium of the Pacific. In math, we deepen our foundational skills and begin to apply them to real life. In social studies, we learn about our communities and the history of our country. We also explore different states and countries through Flat Stanley. As spring approaches, we dive into poetry and study the life of William Shakespeare and his plays. The Shakespeare unit culminates in a performance of one of his most famous plays: A Midsummer Night's Dream. As the end of the school year approaches, students not only show great confidence in their reading and writing abilities, setting them up for success as they enter the upper elementary grades, but they also gain confidence in who they are as individuals.
