Peninsula Heritage School offers a full year of high school-level Geometry for its Eighth Grade students who complete Algebra I in their Seventh Grade year. Taught by Mrs. Joan E. Behrens, the course uses the Prentice Hall text, California Geometry, which provides students with the tools of geometry, reinforcement of algebraic operations, and an introduction to trigonometry. Congruency, similarity, and a full study of circles are emphasized, along with the rigor of formal geometric proofs. Students enjoy discovering geometric concepts through hands-on manipulation of geometric shapes as well as practice in the Japanese art of origami. In addition, the broader world of mathematics is opened to the students as they research and give in-class presentations about famous mathematicians throughout history, mathematical current events, and explanations of the numerous fields within mathematics.
